Before responding, evaluate your opening lines against these criteria: Does the first sentence raise a question the reader must answer by continuing? Does the opening avoid the weak-start patterns - waking up, weather reports, mirror descriptions, dreams, and throat-clearing backstory? Could a reader distinguish this opening from a hundred others in its genre? If the true story starts in paragraph three, cut paragraphs one and two. Present only an opening you'd bet a slush reader keeps reading.
