Decide how to simplify the complex system in {system_context} into a tractable model without simplifying away what matters. (1) State the question the model must answer and the accuracy actually required, because the right level of simplification is defined by the question — a model can be far cruder than reality yet exactly right for its purpose. (2) List the physical effects present and estimate each one's magnitude of contribution to the outcome, using order-of-magnitude reasoning; this quantitative triage, not intuition, decides what to keep. (3) Identify the dominant balance — the two or three effects that govern the behavior — and the small parameters that justify neglecting the rest. (4) Make each simplifying assumption explicit and state the condition under which it holds, so the model's domain of validity is known rather than discovered by failure. (5) Check that no neglected effect becomes dominant somewhere in the operating range — a term small on average can dominate at a boundary or extreme, which is where simplified models betray you. (6) State what the simplified model captures, what it deliberately omits, and the specific regime where you'd need to add complexity back. Verify against a known limit or a fuller calculation on one case.
