(4) Match the control's experience to the treatment's in everything except the active ingredient: same measurement schedule, same attention, same setting — differential handling manufactures spurious effects. (5) Address blinding: who can be blinded, and where blinding fails, how the resulting bias will be assessed. (6) State what a well-behaved control result should look like and what an anomalous one would signal about the design.
