For a claimed causal direction, verify the possibility that the effect actually runs the other way was considered. When two things are associated, the assumed cause may be the consequence — the sick may take a treatment rather than the treatment causing sickness. Confirm the reasoning establishes that the cause precedes the effect and addresses reverse causation, and flag any directional claim that hasn't ruled out the arrow pointing the opposite way.
