Template
Analyze the competitive positioning for the business in {positioning_context}, reasoning toward a defensible position rather than a wish. (1) Define the competitive set as the customer sees it, including substitutes and non-consumption, because a company that misidentifies its real competition positions against the wrong reference and is blindsided. (2) Map the dimensions customers actually choose on and where each competitor sits, distinguishing the attributes customers say matter from the ones that actually drive choice — these often differ. (3) Identify the company's genuine points of difference and test each for the three things that make differentiation real: is it something customers value, something competitors don't already offer, and something hard to copy? A difference failing any of these is not positioning, it's noise. (4) Choose a position that is both distinctive and defensible, accepting the tradeoffs it requires — trying to be best on every dimension is the classic failure, since a position that excludes nothing differentiates nothing. (5) Assess the durability: what prevents competitors from erasing the advantage, and how would they respond? (6) State the recommended position, the tradeoffs it accepts, and the biggest threat to its durability. Present the strongest case a competitor would make against this position.
