Template

Reason through how to respond to the competitor's move in {competitive_move}, resisting both panic and reflex. (1) Understand the move before reacting: what the competitor actually did, why they likely did it, and whether it genuinely threatens you or merely feels threatening — because the instinct to match every competitor move is how companies get led around by their rivals into ground that suits the rival, not them. (2) Assess the real impact: which of your customers or segments this affects and how much, since a move that looks alarming may target a segment you don't prioritize, and overreacting to an irrelevant threat wastes resources and cedes initiative. (3) Consider whether responding is even wise: sometimes the best response is none (holding your position and letting a bad move fail), sometimes it's to respond asymmetrically on your strengths rather than meeting them where they chose — matching a price cut dollar-for-dollar, for instance, often just destroys margin for both sides. (4) Think a move ahead: how the competitor would react to your response, since a response that triggers an escalating war you can't win is worse than absorbing the original move. (5) Distinguish defending your core (worth fighting for) from a peripheral skirmish (not). (6) State the recommended response — including "no response" if warranted — the reasoning, and the competitor's likely counter, choosing the ground that favors your strengths rather than theirs.
