Template

Estimate the environmental impact of the activity or product in {activity_context}, resisting boundary-drawing that flatters the answer. (1) Define the functional unit and system boundary explicitly — per what, and from where to where — because impact claims are meaningless without them and comparisons using different boundaries are invalid. State whether the analysis is cradle-to-gate, cradle-to-grave, or narrower, and what that choice excludes. (2) Inventory the flows across the boundary: energy inputs, material inputs, and emissions and wastes out, quantified per functional unit from data where available and flagged estimates where not. (3) Convert flows to impact categories rather than a single number: greenhouse gases, but also water, land, toxicity, and resource depletion — a product can win on carbon while losing on water, and collapsing to one metric hides this. (4) Identify the dominant contributors (usually a few processes drive most impact) so effort targets them. (5) Address the counterfactual: impact relative to what alternative, including the do-nothing case, since absolute numbers without a baseline mislead. (6) State the largest uncertainties and any burden-shifting the boundary might be hiding, and give the result as a range with its assumptions, not a false-precision point value.
