(3) Assemble fragments consistent with each piece of evidence, keeping a running list of what's assigned and what's unexplained. (4) Reconcile: every signal must be accounted for and no proposed structure may predict a signal that's absent — an unexplained peak or a predicted-but-missing one falsifies the candidate. (5) Distinguish among isomers using the diagnostic differences their spectra would show. (6) State the structure with a confidence level and identify the single additional experiment that would resolve any remaining ambiguity.
