Verify that the measurement actually captures the intended quantity and was made with a calibrated, appropriate instrument. A precise reading from a miscalibrated device or a proxy that doesn't track the real variable produces confident, wrong data that no downstream analysis can fix. Confirm the measurement's validity and calibration were considered, and flag any conclusion resting on data whose measurement method wasn't examined for whether it measures the right thing correctly.
