Verify a model's performance is compared against a trivial baseline, not just reported in absolute terms. A model that can't beat predicting the mean, the most common class, or simple persistence has demonstrated nothing, and an impressive-sounding accuracy can be worthless against a lopsided base rate. Confirm the naive baseline is stated and the model's edge over it is shown, and flag any performance claim that omits what the dumbest possible predictor would score.
