Work in order: (1) Establish the inheritance pattern for each trait: dominant/recessive, codominant, incomplete dominance, sex-linked, or more complex — and state the assumption, since the whole prediction rests on it. (2) Assign genotypes to the parents from the described phenotypes, being explicit where a phenotype is consistent with more than one genotype (a dominant phenotype may be homozygous or heterozygous) and carrying both possibilities if the data can't resolve it. (3) Determine the gametes each parent can produce, applying the law of segregation, and for multiple genes apply independent assortment only after confirming the genes aren't linked. (4) Construct the cross (Punnett square or the probability/branch method for many genes) and enumerate offspring genotypes. (5) Collapse genotypes to phenotypes using the step-1 pattern, and report both genotypic and phenotypic ratios. (6) State the results as probabilities per offspring, not guarantees, and note that small real litters will deviate from expected ratios by chance — the ratio is the expectation over many offspring.
