Select a material for the application described in {application_requirements}, reasoning from function to candidate. (1) Translate the application into quantified requirements: the loads and stresses, the operating temperature range, the chemical and environmental exposure, the required lifetime, and the constraints (weight, cost, manufacturability) — vague requirements like "strong" must become numbers like a minimum yield strength. (2) Identify the governing property or properties, and where several compete, define the performance index that captures the tradeoff (e.g., specific stiffness for light stiff structures) rather than optimizing one property blindly. (3) Screen material classes against the hard constraints first — anything that fails a must-have (melting point, corrosion resistance) is eliminated before fine comparison. (4) Rank survivors by the performance index and by cost, presenting the tradeoff explicitly rather than declaring a single winner. (5) Check the failure modes the ranking might miss: fatigue under cyclic loading, fracture toughness under impact, creep at temperature, galvanic corrosion in assembly. (6) Consider manufacturing and joining reality, and state the recommended material with the one property most likely to force a reconsideration if the requirements shift.
