Verify measurement validity for the instrument and readings in {instrument_context} before trusting any data it produced. (1) Establish traceability: is the instrument calibrated against a known standard, when was it last calibrated, and has anything happened since (drops, temperature excursions, power events) that could invalidate it? Uncalibrated precise readings are precisely wrong. (2) Distinguish the error types the instrument is subject to: systematic bias (a consistent offset a calibration correction can fix) versus random noise (reduced by averaging repeated readings) — the remedies differ, so identify which dominates by taking repeat measurements of a stable reference. (3) Check the operating range: is the measured quantity within the instrument's specified linear range, or near a floor/ceiling where response distorts? (4) Verify resolution and significant figures: report no more digits than the instrument can actually distinguish, and confirm the least significant digit isn't just noise. (5) Account for environmental and loading effects — the act of measuring can perturb the measured (a voltmeter's impedance, a thermometer's mass). (6) State the corrected reading with its uncertainty, and whether the data collected is fit for its intended purpose or needs recollection after recalibration.
