Verify that an aggregate trend isn't reversed within its subgroups. Simpson's paradox occurs when a relationship that holds across combined data flips direction once the data is split by a lurking variable, so the aggregate can point the opposite way from every subgroup. Confirm that where a confounding grouping variable exists, the analysis checked whether the trend survives disaggregation, and flag any aggregate conclusion that could reverse when the relevant subgroups are examined.
