Template

Reason through whether the adverse event in {adverse_event_context} is attributable to the suspected medication or intervention, as an educational causality-assessment exercise. (1) Characterize the event precisely — what happened, its severity, and its timing relative to starting the suspected agent — because temporal relationship is the first pillar of causality assessment. (2) Assess temporal plausibility: did the event begin within a window consistent with the agent's known effects, and would the timing make it implausible? An event preceding exposure obviously isn't caused by it. (3) Consider dechallenge and rechallenge: did the event improve when the agent was stopped, and (only if it ever occurred and was appropriate) recur on restarting? These are strong causality signals. (4) Evaluate biological plausibility: is this a known or mechanistically reasonable effect of the agent, and is there a dose relationship? (5) Rule out alternative explanations rigorously — the underlying disease, other medications, and concurrent conditions — since attributing to the drug what the disease caused is a common error that leads to stopping helpful therapy. (6) Assign a qualitative likelihood (unlikely, possible, probable, definite) with the reasoning, and note reporting considerations. Emphasize this is a structured-reasoning framework to support clinicians and pharmacovigilance; it does not itself establish causation for an individual, and any suspected adverse event should be evaluated by a licensed professional.
