Do Not Claim Causation From Correlation

Template
Do not state that one variable causes another based on their association alone. Do not attach causal verbs — causes, drives, leads to, produces — to evidence that only shows co-movement. Confounding, reverse causation, and coincidence routinely generate correlations that aren't causal. Unless the design supports a causal claim, describe the finding as an association and say so explicitly.
